When teaching Armorer courses, we sometimes observe people struggle
during installation of the hammer, as it requires that the hammer be
installed while compressing the hammer spring into place. This often
times can be challenging, as it takes quite a bit of finger strength and
dexterity. The Sully Hammer Handle is a tool that is designed to help
provide the user leverage when installation AR15 and M16 Hammers. You
use it like a bottle opener, in that you are able to hold it in one
hand, and use it as a lever while you wind the hammer into place under
the hammer springs pressure.
The Sully Hammer Handle is double ended. One end has a square
pocket, and the other has a "L" shaped pocket. The L shaped pocket is
designed to be used with Single Stage Hammers, on both Semi-Auto and
Full-Auto type hammers. The square cut pocket is designed to be used
with most 2-stage hammers. Several of the 2-stage hammers we have been
able to use it on are from RockRiver, Larue, Schmid and Geissele (Keep
in mind that not all 2-stage hammers have the same dimensions).
To use the Sully Hammer Handle, simply install the hammer into the
matching pocket on the end of the tool. Make sure that your hammer
spring is on the hammer so it is winding tighter as the hammer is
cocking rearward. Carefully position the hammer in the receiver, so
that the hammer spring legs are on top of the trigger pin. Keep a thumb
on the side of the hammer so it stays firmly inside the pocket of the
tool. Use the Sully Hammer Handle as a lever to help push and compress
the hammer and hammer spring into the receiver, and when it is properly
aligned with the receiver pin holes, install the hammer pin.
